The return marked the first hot air balloon flights in Palo Duro Canyon in more than 13 years. For this reporter, it was also a first.

The Friday morning sky was even more spectacular over the state park when hot air balloons began to rise with the sun.

Good news for Texas hikers, nature lovers and Texans in general – the upper rim of Palo Verde Canyon is now protected by the Texas Agricultural Land Trust.

The Texas Agricultural Land Trust has helped the Owens family keep 1,725 acres of land in their family, with another 1,323 acres in the works.

You can for sure avoid crowds at these least-visited parks.

“It’s a two-part event with the balloon launch in the morning, so you can pretty much see them all around the city,” a parks assistant director said.
