The City of Canyon Commission decided Tuesday to set a bond election next May for renovations of the fire station and police department.

That decision followed months of discussions and a lengthy debate during Tuesday's meeting. Place 2 Commissioner Cody Jones pushed for the bond to be set at $15 million to ensure it would cover all the costs of renovations and additions. There had been suggestions that the city could apply for grants from the federal government to supplement the money from the bond.

"I just don't feel comfortable with that. I don't feel comfortable with the consequences of losing that (grant) from the federal government. I think we have the opportunity to fulfill the needs of the folks," Jones stated.

Canyon Mayor Gary Hinders pushed for a $13 million bond, saying he was primarily concerned with minimizing the financial impact on the taxpayers, who would see an increase if the bond is approved.

"It is just 36 dollars a year, but why are we asking them to do that if we can get it done at 13 million?," Hinders asked.

The commissioners reached a compromise, set the bond for $14 million, and scheduled the election for May 2025.

If the voters approve, the renovations would transform the former Gold Star Trust building into the new police department and add sleeping quarters for 24-hour staffing at the fire station.
