Canyon among safest cities in Texas, according to new study

CANYON, Texas (KVII) — Canyon is among the safest cities in Texas, according to a new study.

SafeWise ranked cities based on a number of factors including FBI crime statistics and data.

The website then released a list of the 50 safest cities in Texas.

Canyon was ranked the 47th safest city in the state. (NOTE: That is down 20-spots from a year ago.)

SafeWise says the goal of the ranking is to highlight cities with low crime rates and ignite conversation and action around how to make communities safer.

• Fair Oaks Ranch and Melissa were the only cities that reported no murders, rapes, and robberies.
  
  
• All of the cities that made the top 50 reported fewer than two violent crimes per 1,000 people.
  
  
• All of the safest cities reported fewer than 13 property crimes per 1,000.

According to SafeWise, Canyon, with a population of 16,726, had a violent crime rate of .9 per 1,000 people last year and a property crime rate of 8.1 per 1,000.
