Soccer Falls Just Short in Texas

CANYON, Texas – SWOSU soccer battled West Texas A&M on Tuesday night. After a quick turnaround and long travel from their contest against UCCS on Sunday, they were defeated 2-1.

The loss brings their record to 0-4-1 on the year. The Dawgs will head back home to regroup and host Midwestern State for a 2:00 pm game on Sunday, September 17.

SWOSU got out of the gates slow, which has been a problem this season. For the fourth consecutive game, they surrendered a goal under 10 minutes into play. The Lady Buffs caught an opening from a shot that ricocheted off the top post to score a 3' goal. West Texas A&M controlled the ball in the early portions of the game, but the Bulldogs became more aggressive as the half progressed.

This aggression eventually came to fruition. Natalie Freeman intercepted a pass at midfield and blew by the backline defender to score and tie the game. Freeman's second goal of the year came from a heads up play to capitalize off of a bad pass. Hannah Guiterrez almost put another goal on the board when she got a one on one opportunity against the goalie in the 35', but put the ball narrowly over the goal. After 45 minutes, the two teams were deadlocked at 1-1.

West Texas A&M opened the second half just as strong as the first. They pushed the ball deep into their attacking half where they drew a penalty in the box from the Dawgs. The penalty kick barely squeezed past Terra Rybuck to give the lead back to the Lady Buffs, one they would keep the remainder of the game. SWOSU got a couple good looks at the goal in the second half, but couldn't put them on target.

With her 32' goal, Freeman now holds the team lead in goals for the Bulldogs. Anna Bager produced the only other shot on goal for the Dawgs.
