CANYON, Texas – The #5 Buffs close out their regular season home schedule this weekend as they welcome the #18 Chaps of Lubbock Christian to Wilder Park for a four-game Lone Star Conference series beginning on Friday afternoon with a doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m. in Canyon followed by a single game on Saturday and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
 
A LOOK AT THE CHAPS
Lubbock Christian enters the weekend with an overall record of 30-12 with a 29-11 mark in Lone Star Conference play to sit second in the league standings. LCU is coming off of a series win over the Hilltoppers of St. Edward's at Hays Field as the Chaps claimed victories in game one (9-7), three (8-6) and four (14-1) with SEU taking game three, 13-9. LCU is 16-4 so far this season on the road.
 
Carson Ogilvie leads the way offensively for the Chaps as the senior infielder from Spring, Texas is hitting .428 on the year with 19 doubles, six triples and 11 homeruns to drive in 51 RBI for a slugging percentage of .813 to go along with 24 walks and 28 strikeouts for an on-base clip of .498 while stealing a team-leading 17 bases. Potential game two starter Ryan Markwardt is 7-1 on the year with a 5.13 ERA as the junior lefty from Itasca, Texas has allowed 33 runs (27 earned) on 50 hits with 29 walks and 51 strikeouts in his 47.1 innings of work for an opposing batting average of .270.
 
LCU HEAD COACH NATHAN BLACKWOOD
Nathan Blackwood is now in his 21st season at the helm of the Lubbock Christian baseball program, holding an overall record of 787-363 (.684) during his time in Lubbock. Blackwood is the program's all-time wins leader, passing legendary LCU head coach Larry Hays in 2022. The Chaps have made four appearances in the NCAA Division II Postseason (2016, 2017, 2019, 2023) while also appearing in four NAIA World Series under Blackwood highlighted by a 2009 NAIA National Championship. The Lubbock native was a two-year letter winner on the diamond for the Chaps in 1991 and 1992. 
 
SERIES HISTORY
The Chaps lead the all-time series against the Buffaloes, 49-21 in a series that dates back to the 1994 campaign. The Chaps swept the regular season series from the Buffs last season in Lubbock followed by a pair of LCU wins at Hays Field during the opening weekend of the LSC Championships to end West Texas A&M's season. The Chaps are 17-10 all-time in Canyon. 
 
WT HEAD COACH MATT VANDERBURG
Matt Vanderburg has built West Texas A&M Baseball into a regional and national contender as the Norman, Oklahoma native is now in his 16th season at the helm of the Buffs. He holds an overall record of 509-279 (.647) during his time in Canyon while registering a career record of 608-351 (.635) in his 19 seasons in collegiate baseball.
 
THE COACHING STAFF
Cory Hall is now in his 14th year at West Texas A&M as the Buffs' Pitching Coach, serving the last eight as the program's Associate Head Coach. Hall has had four different pitchers drafted in the Major League Baseball Draft during his time in Canyon with multiple other professional players learning under one of the top pitching minds in collegiate baseball. Assistant Coach Shawn Neale was named WT's Recruiting Coordinator in 2022 as the Toronto native returns for his eighth season in Canyon. The Buffs welcome Bret Simmermacher as a Volunteer Assistant for the 2024 campaign.
 
THE RACE FOR AN LSC CHAMPIONSHIP
Two regular season weekends remain as the race for a Lone Star Conference Championship heats up this weekend with big series taking place in Canyon and San Angelo. Three teams enter the weekend with a statistical chance to claim the LSC Title. Angelo State (30-12, 28-12) hits the road as they travel to Austin for a four-game series with St. Edward's (19-23, 19-21) at Lucian-Hamilton Field. 
 
All eyes will be on the Texas Panhandle as the top two teams in the LSC standings battle in a Rivalry on the Range showdown at Wilder Park as the Buffs (31-11, 30-10) hold a one-game lead over Lubbock Christian (30-12, 29-11).
 
The LSC Championship will feature a two-week tournament comprised of the top eight teams. The opening round (three-game series) will be May 3-5 at the sites of the top four seeds. The winners will advance to a double-elimination tournament played May 9-11 at the site of the top remaining seed.
 
LSC DIGITAL NETWORK
The LSC Digital Network is in its fifth season showcasing the academic and athletic events of the league and its 18 member institutions. Volleyball, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's basketball, baseball and softball broadcasts will be available via conference-wide pay-per-view passes.
   
The LSC Digital Network will offer season passes for football, volleyball, soccer, basketball, baseball and softball, giving fans access to all regular season contests for that sport. In addition, viewers will continue to have the option to purchase a $10 day pass that provides access to all broadcasts aired that day and access to all archived content for 24 hours.
