Buffs Battle Elements, Play to Draw with Dustdevils

CANYON, Texas – On a rainy Saturday afternoon, the West Texas A&M men's soccer team played to a scoreless draw with the Texas A&M International Dustdevils. The Buffs, now 3-2-6 overall, move to 1-0-2 in Lone Star Conference play while TAMIU holds a 2-5-5, 0-2-1 record after the tie.

The Buffs controlled the pace from the opening kick, pushing into attacking third. WT's first scoring opportunity came in the 12th minute. Adam Szostake stole possession from TAMIU, controlling the ball into the box. Szostake drove past two defenders and pulled Dustdevils' goalkeeper Robin Verhoeven off his line, but Verhoeven cut down the angle to make the save. The Buffs continued to push for a go-ahead goal but came up empty for the remainder of the half.

Giancarlo Saldana looked to have given WT the lead a minute into the second half but watched his shot go out for a corner kick. The Buffs continued to put pressure on Verhoeven, forcing the goalkeeper to make tough saves. With less than six minutes to go, Kenny Brown ripped a shot from outside the box that skipped in on Verhoeven. Verhoeven smothered the ball and stifled the WT offense. As the clock ticked under a minute, The Dustdevils' Jordan Mase broke through the Buffs' backline. Mase looked to have the game-winning goal, but Asaf Kristal cut down the TAMIU scoring opportunity.

WT held a decisive 23-12 advantage in shots and 13-9 lead in shots on goal. Kristal made a career-high nine saves to keep the Dustdevils quiet.

WT travels to San Antonio where a rematch with St. Mary's awaits them. The Buffs and Rattlers kick off at 7:30 p.m. at the Sigma Beta Chi Field.
