SILVERTON, Texas (KFDA) - State officials approved $15 million in aid today for Silverton to fix its water shortage and contamination.

The Texas Water Development Board voted to grant $10 million and loan another $5 million to develop wells and pipe the water to the city.

The need has resulted from Lake McKenzie’s historic low level and arsenic in some existing well water. Besides drilling more wells at Silverton’s Swisher County wellfield, the money will pay for a pump station, water storage and an 11-mile pipline.

According to a board analysis, the project will also require a rate increase for customers.
